Subject:CX3 vs the SK1
I haven't touched the CX3 since I got the SK1. After doing a lot of playing witht he SK the last three weeks, I decided to get the korg back out and compare. I was running them through vent and leslie. The first thing I noticed was how much more substantial the Korg felt. There's some mass there when your playing it that kind of feels hammond like in comparison to the SK. However, as far as action goes, they both are equally pleasing to play touch wise. They both trigger nice and shallow, and they both have spring.
Now as far as sound goes, I was surprised. I was scared I'd like the Korg more and wonder why I blew 2 grand. But I was kind of expecting to get the Korg out and say "how could I have put up with this, get it out of here". It was neither. The SK is definitely more like a hammond soundwise for the most part. The upper octave is definitely worlds better. Using the upper drawbars it definitely shimmers more than the Korg. But the Korg does cut through a mix a lot better, especially with a Jimmy McGriff dirty organ sound. I can definitely see dragging the Korg/leslie out for some of the more important blues gigs I do, and bringing the SK along for the extra sounds, just because of the way it cuts through. However I haven't gigged with the SK and leslie yet so that might change.
The SK definitely has better percussion than the Korg, but I was surprised that the Korg nailed the key click better than the hammond SK. That seems to be my biggest dissapointment in the SK. But the bottom line is just like in the studio I have the M3 and the CV, and they complement one another, the CX3 and the SK are both different sounding organs. I did get the SK because I needed something that was capable of going right into the PA in a pinch and covering wurly (my real one isn't liking the road!). The SK definitely fits that need, the wurly is usable, but not super great. However, the rhodes and clav are way better than I expected in the SK, been using them quite a bit. But for what the Korgs are going for, I'm probably going to keep it around.
