Subject:Re: OT: Leslie project

A lot depends on the woofer that is chosen. The Leslie 25 is about the
same size as the 142/145, or the bottom section of a 122/147. When
space is 'borrowed' to make room for the tweeter section, that cuts
things down to the proportions of 145, give or take. Some players
always felt that a 145 had slightly inadequate bass. When I converted
my 251 into a 145, I felt that I traded deeper bass for 'warmer' bass.
YMMV.

Where is all this leading? If we compare the 147 and 145 -- identical
in every way, except for the cabinet -- there is a larger square hole in
the back panel of the 147, as well as an extra opening (nicked-off
corner) on the woofer panel, which I always felt created a set of ports
tuned to the cabinet size. There have been a lot of advances in speaker
design since the '50s, and it may be possible to find a 12" speaker that
a) goes as deep as a Leslie 15"; b) is about as efficient as a Leslie
Speaker; and c) is designed for a smaller enclosure. If so, it would
be better suited for the 145's cabinet space, and might actually provide
*deeper* bass than a 15" speaker.
