Hi Randy ...

I'm spoiled, I suppose. I've been working with bass-bins since the 70's, when they really weren't all that commonly seen onstage. I tend to pump fairly deep (synthesized lower-octave) "bubbly bass."

Remember when you were a kid and went to your first parade, and the sensation you felt in your chest and gut when the bass drums in the marching bands passed by? That's the experience I try to impart with my pedal bass. But not everyone wanting good lows is quite as maniacal as am I.

So, tastes in low end vary. Before I switched to the MS, I was carrying around a pair of Meyer Sound UPA-1Ps and a UMS-1P sub. The UPAs were heavy, and I couldn't get them close enough together to get the rotary sim separation I wanted, so i started looking around.

The KBR-3D sounded closer to the Meyer 3-ways than anything else I tried, even though it's a 2-way. I opted to keep the sub with the system, which makes the KBR-3D that much louder and cleaner by taking the strain off the 10" Eminence transducers in it (yes, the "sub-out" on the KBR-3D is a switched jack that activates a crossover and shunts frequencies below 160 hz if memory serves to the sub).

As I stated earlier, when I play venues that require more "oomph" than this rig can give me, it's an FOH gig, with me monitoring through in-ears.

Summer-before last, I played an outdoor charity gig in front of about 5,000 people. The sound guy ran out of inputs and asked me just to turn up my rig. After we got started, he kept sending up his tech assist to ask me if I could back it down some because I was overpowering the sound system, which was a 15 KW half-concert stack. Of course, it could have just been the acoustics.

Best,
Fox

Hi Fox,

I was very interested to read your account of using the Motion Sound stereo amp for Leslie simulation. A solution like that really appeals to me, especially if there's enough juice that I can ditch the mixer. Still wondering a bit about the bass, though, since you mentioned that you bring along a sub when providing bass for the group. I play left hand bass in both my trios, it's pretty essential for me....... In any case, I plan to look around and see if any local stores have a KP-500SN for me to try out.

Thanks,

Randy
