There have to be corners cut to get the price down. Quality control is one of them and dependability will suffer as a result. This doesn’t mean the speakers can’t sound good. I know David is a big fan of the EVs and has had great luck with them. One thing I will say about the QSCs is that they are used by many sound companies as rental stock. That says a lot for a piece of “music store” grade equipment. Rental gear get pretty rough treatment and failures mean refunds as well as upset customers. You will not see IONs, EVs, etc. in many (if any) of the larger rental companies. That said, a friend of mine is a pro audio dealer in Seattle and he loaned me a small EV rig that I liked very much while I was up there. Given the choice I wouldn’t use any of the plastic cabinet monitors but to get into a premium wood based cabinet costs significantly more. Price always has its tradeoffs.

This is a very interesting discussion for me, as I have recently been rethinking my amp set up and looking for other options. (I currently have a pair of JBL Eon 15XTs that sound pretty good.) Like most of you guys, I would love to ditch the mixer; it looks like both the EVs and the Motion Sound would allow that. I'm concerned about the bass, though, since I play left hand bass in both my groups. Having to bring a sub would kind of defeat this attempt at streamlining my rig. Also, re: the new EVs - they seem to be very hot on the Keyboard Corner discussion, but this thread by pro sound guys kind of gives me pause: http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php?topic=144643.0

Fox,
I appreciate your suggestions with the Motion Sound stuff. I tried many combinations of it until I got the Ventilator. Then I got the QSCs and loved the sound of that combination. I recently decided to set up an extra X-keyboard stand with a 1x2' piece of plywood on top. I set both K8s on it, angled slightly away from each other and that sounded fantastic!. The horns were just below ear level and I could hear everything clearly. The Leslie sim sounded very good. So I guess that's similar to the KP500S type arrangement. Anyway, that works for me. I'm considering the EVs just so I can ditch the small mixer that I need to drive the QSCs. We'll see.
Cheers, Ken

Stereo keyboard amplifiers are specifically designed and tuned to avoid problems associated with near-placement, avoiding passive-radiation and phase cancellation complications that generally result from a dominant cabinet modulating a lessor cabinet in close proximity, while the fixed-angle projection widens the "sweet spot" such that the stereo image remains well-preserved for anyone not more than 45 degrees off of center axis ... yes, one could place their separate speaker cabinets in such a configuration, but not consistently, and not conveniently or in tight real estate situations with any two speaker stands I have ever had the pleasure of using.
Such concerns may or may not be important to most, particularly in a loud bar band setting. And you're right, Gary ... as I stated, I am not using the rotary channel. I have a Burn ... and a MOJO ... both of which out-sim the MS rotary channel. Sometimes I let my guitar player use the MS rotary channel though and he loves it! Of course, he's a guitar player ... what does he know? "Old Fashion Love Song" never sounded so good and the "Stevie" vibe is 100% SRV! It's all in how you tune that tube circuit!
Perhaps folks should lighten up a bit and consider giving the MS stereo cabinets another try ... Sweetwater has an excellent return policy if you don't have a local vender. They probably wouldn't be carrying them again either, had the company not made significant changes, primarily in customer support and QC. Of course, YMMV.
Peace,
Fox

I do agree that separating your stereo monitors more than 5 or 6 feet is not a good idea when simulating a Leslie (no matter what monitor you use).
