I've been playing around with the seemingly countless ways to customize the SK1-73 to just my liking.  The Wurly was kind of borderline until I discovered that you can adjust the response of that patch (not to be confused with the global velocity response of the entire keyboard.)  At a certain window, there's a choice of responses between 100% full impact all the time to 4 other settings (1-4).  The Wurly was originally set at either "1" or "2" and I just wasn't getting the right dynamics from that setting (kind of a dull sound).  I reset to "4" and was actually too easy to achieve that spank.  However, I eased the setting to "3" and the results is perfect for my situation.  It's just enough brighter than the default setting, having that trademark "struck reed" characteristic without going overboard. Perfect.  I've done this with several of the other Extra Sounds as well some being too much and some not quite enough but thankfully H/S gives you
the tools you need to tweak just to your liking.  It's funny... I figured that the Leslie sim would be the most likely feature to fine tune but, honestly, I haven't touched any of the dozens of adjustable settings.  I've been using the Rotary Sims just as they came from the factory and they sound fantastic (other band members and audience's opinions as well).  For amplification, one time I used a Groovetube SFX Spacestation and the other time it was thru a Bose PAS L1 and 2 Bass modules. I bought this keyboard without ever getting play one beforehand.   I consider this purchase the best gamble I have ever taken.  This keyboard is simply awesome!

I think as these keyboards have evolved from just organ clones to extra voices, etc. (the electro probably deserves the award for starting this trend) we're going to find less "best clone" discussions and more"this works best for my situation" discussions. When I got my SK I had certain qualifications I needed in a keyboard that were very specific. I thought I'd be living with a compromise on the organ to get there. But I researched it all hard, and the only surprise to me was that I ended up compromising on the wurly a bit, and stepping up a few notches on the organ from where I was. SO now I play more rhodes, I can deal with that. The wurly has been the only downer to what I expected, and it's minor. Everything else has been a "this does way more than I expected" thing. But I agonized over the decision, and read everything available out there, which was pretty good info. But my situation is way different than everyone elses, which is where I think it's
gonna be less about a perfect organ sound and more about a what else does it do for the future of clones for most of us.
I realize everybody's going to like what they like, and what works for one will be lacking for another. But we're musicians and we're still gonna end up bonding to our instruments, and loving them or dumping them to get something we love. The danger is we're all like drug addicts, we find something we like we want everybody to try it! But the fact is now there's much less overlap than there used to be with the one trick pony clones. Look back at the posts, there's not a whole lot of criticism of organ sounds between a lot of these (with the exception of the roland, which I have a feeling once people start messing with them they'll be fine). It's all what else it does and how well that we're discussing. I think that's a good thing, and never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be out with one keyboard only, and even less so, leslie-less, which I think is my next step. SO, it's all good!
