Shawn, I inquired with my local retail/roland rep regarding your suggestion that the RD-64 cannot play and send MIDI information simultaneously. The answer is that YES it can do that. Here's the response I got and it was a quote from the RD-64 manual..

From p.13 of the RD-64 manual (p.13 of the PDF file), the following:

"Controlling an External MIDI Sound Module in Piano Mode

In the RD-64's Piano mode you can specify the MIDI channel and transmit MIDI messages such as bank select, program change, and aftertouch to an external MIDI sound module. For details, refer to the A-88 owner's manual sections "Setting the MIDI Transmit Channel (MIDI CHANNEL)," "Switching Sounds," and "Using the D-BEAM to Modify the Sound."

So the answer is YES it can transmit all expected Midi information while in "piano" mode.. including note on/off and velocity etc. The special "controller" mode is specifically designed for the Integra or Jupiter series which have their own supernatural sounds (and a more extensive list of them) so the RD-64 doesn't need to generate tones.

So you can use the RD-64 as a controller (while in regular piano mode) to control an external synth module, AND it has an additional special controller mode that is designed to integrate with Integra/Jupiter products.

BTW the reference to that A-88 is a little confusing but I assume the RD-64 midi functions are the same as the A-88..
