Subject:Re: Roland RD64 OT
Since I have an Integra-7, I can explain this.
Most of the "Supernatural" sounds in the Integra-7 have "performance variations" that you let control 'playing' characteristics. For example, For example, with a violin these variations include staccato, tremelo, or pizzacatto. You can change these manually, or through software, since these are all connected to specific MIDI control codes. For example, the performance variations mentioned abouve are controlled by CC's 80-82. Other CC codes activate other parameters (such as strumming mode with a guitar). You can configure a regular keyboard with sliders or pitch wheels to send these messsages as well. I've managed to do a couple with my Kurzweil PC3 but it's a pain if you're not a programmer by nature, which I'm not.
What the RD64 does is let you 'choose' to instantly change a performance variation using buttons on the left side. I haven't seen the manual, but my guess is that in Integra--7 mode, each button is designed to send a specific CC to the Integra. I assume other buttons make it easier to switch sounds.
Note that the excellent tonewheel in the Integra-7 has no "real time" performance variations. You can adjust an extensive array rotary and percussion settings and it had adjustable drawbars (but no dedicated organ chorus! Boo!), but you can't (as far as I know) adjust these settings in real time using an RD64's buttons, although I imagine that Sysex messages could do it. I have heard that you can adjust the drawbar settings in real time by assigning CCs to sliders in a controller that has them. I haven't tried to do this yet.
