Subject:Re: Less Expensive Alternative to Vent?
Ken, mine is set up to match the way I record the leslies, and what they sound like through the studio monitors. I typically like a real close, hard panned leslie, two 57's on the top maybe an inch from the wood, and a beta 52 on the bottom, maybe a foot away. Then again, my leslies aren't 122's, I have the 50C (two actually, one for live, one for the studio) and a 44w, so they're going to be a bit different anyway. When I play live and have to use the vent, I typically pull the mic distance away quite a bit. I also run it through a tube pre both live and when I'm practicing late at night through the studio setupand don't want to piss my marine wife off, but to be fair to the boss RT20, I didn't for this recording. THat adds some improvement and takes the "color" away a bit (or blurs it might be a better way of putting it). I ran everything the same going into the leslie, RT20, and vent, which was direct from the line out mod on the m3, volume set the same as I set the Korg.
One thing I have noticed was the real hammond makes any differences between real leslie and vent come out more, the worse the clone, the less the difference.
