Subject:Re: Modelled v Sampled Pianos
>>>You also might consider the fact that your keyboard may be sending an uneven MIDI velocity response from the black keys vs. the white keys. A little playing around will verify this. Velocity response is one of the trickiest things to get right when pairing one keyboard with a non-related sound engine.
I first thought my playing had deteriorated then considered the velocity settings for the keyboard but I hadn't changed these from the default that Mainstage was using from the Axiom. It came to my attention in the patch I set up for the intro to Back to Black by Amy Winehouse which is piano only 4 chord progression (Dm, Gm, Bb and A) semi - quaver pattern and even volume is essential for me to add some accents to create a swung rhythmic feel.
I set up the modelled patch (Piano 1) adjacent to the sampled patch and switched between them while playing and for the Gm chord in particular the 3 notes sounded evenly balanced using Piano 1 while in the sampled patch Bb drowned out the G and D in the Gm chord . This effect was there but less noticable for Bb chord played F, Bb D and the biggest difference in Gm chord is the G is really low in volume compared to the Bb.
I would not want to be a student again and be required to play Moonlight Sonata smoothly using the sampled patch!!
