Subject:Re: SampleTank
Hi All,
I, too, used SampleTank in a live environment for a couple of years with
a V-Machine. Pros:
* It has a wide range of useful pianos, strings, brass, etc. and a
lot of very practical effects (reverb, chorus, etc.)
* The quality of the sampling is generally excellent.
* Certain aspects of the sounds can be tweaked. Generally, they are
the 'important' elements, and almost everything can be linked to a
MIDI CC#.
* Splits and layers are easy to do, using the 'mixer' function. It
took me a little time to master the quirks, but I have layers of
piano and strings, and splits like Rhodes and brass.
* One can create new sounds by importing WAV/AIFF files.
Cons:
* The MIDI implementation is lacking in some areas. The main issue
is that it isn't possible to map CCs in a reverse manner -- i.e.,
from 127 to 0 -- so unless your master keyboard can do this,
cross-fading is nearly impossible.
* There is a noticeable delay loading new programs, which depends on
the complexity of the samples/zones. On a laptop, it's annoying;
on a V-Machine, it can be downright scary to see the "Processing
..." screen for 10 sec. or longer.
* The ability to manipulate new samples is crude. I could never
figure out how to blend several layers by velocity, for example.
* The SampleTank format cannot be exported to other sample players.
If anyone is interested in getting a copy, I have a few sealed boxes
left on the AshbySolutions.com site for a ridiculous (and unpublishable)
price. Please contact me offline for details.

-BW
