I imagine it could be done either way, that is, hardwired in parallel or driven individually by separate active (or passive) devices but for economy wired in parallel since typically they are not intended to be used simultaneously anyway.

If they are hardwired parallel, and they are both loads are balanced, you can usually use both simultaneously, but if one of the loads are very low Z, one may influence the other, but often the loads are 10K ohm so in that case no big problem. If 1/4" load is un-balanced you will short one side of the signal and the XLR will become are un-balanced as well.

Check the manual or at least tell us what make/model you have there.
