I struggled with the same question. Live my Korg through a vent sounded better in the audience than through a real leslie, but at home in the studio it's night and day, the leslie blows the vent away. How can a vent sound better than a leslie in the audience but not at home? I think it comes down to the same principal as makeup. When a woman (or man nowadays I guess) puts it on they do so to accentuate their own characteristics. I think a vent through a house system (or clone/vent as to the OP)somehow accentuates some of the characteristics of a hammond/leslie. I also think Mic techniques plays into it, along with the inability of a leslie to project as far as a PA can.
