I understand what you're saying... and I guess depending on the type of music you're playing, how many bands you're playing with, etc. some sheet music, cheat sheets, or whatever could make sense. But just speaking for myself, in years past all the rock, Top 40, and country bands I even played in expected that you memorize the material. Maybe things have changed.

I don't see any problem with people using music stands, notes, books, PC's, iPads, etc.
Most punters in the crowd couldn't care less. They're getting live music, dancing and having a good time and a cheat sheet on stage isn't going to change their night.
In the 20+years I've had notes on the floor or in recent years, an iPad mounted on my rig, I've never had anyone comment or complain about it.

A good memory for playing would be great to have, but I've never been blessed with it.

For those looking for a good system. I use an iPad with an App called "unrealBook". You can put setlists together in no time and if a random song gets called, you can pull it up from the index in seconds.
The App costs about $5
If my iPad died, or got pinched, I have a pdf reader on my iPhone that would get me through in a pinch.
