I agree that it is better to memorize the tunes, but some of us memorize things and retain them much easier than others. If you play in one band that plays regularly and has a limited songlist (50 or so tunes) then that is one thing. In my case, in order to keep the gigs flowing, I play with 6 different bands, and have a large pop and jazz solo repertoire as well, adding up to 500-600 songs, plus fake books for playing requests. Memorization has always been difficult for me, but it is getting better. It is much better to have a chart available for reference if needed to give you that one chord change or one lyric line that slipped from your memory than to slough over it and have the band suffer as a result. Having the technology to maintain and call up your song catalog is being professional- NOT LAZY.
