My system is QSC 12 or 10 depending on the size of the place and/or into PA ....
The response and contol of freedom of expression for the player is greater with the VENT ...IMHO the controls are all
right in front of me as i put my VENT on the left side top of NE3 or NE4D now ....and all the controls of the VENT are avail on the fly ...at my fingertips ...where on the NE4D sim ...the controls are kind of all over the place and many require system changes ..you cannot do that on the fly in the mid of a song ...IMHO
Dont get me wrong the NE4D sim Rotor is very good better than my last keyboard .......before NE3 was a Hammond XK-1 I did not like that sim rotor at all ...
both the VENT and NE4D Sim Rotary systems sound like a real leslie ..without moving air ...( I have always thought the Moving of air was not a factor,...) IMHO tho it can cool the player a bit in a hot venue ...lol
Again this is all IMHO
Mike

Nice review... what don't you like about the Nord Leslie sim as compared to the Ventilator? Also, what do you use for your amplifier/speaker? Thanks

Subject: [CWSG] New Nord Electro 4 D At first Glance
All .......Yes it is me again ..with a first glance review of NE4D
The reasons I considered a change from NE3 to NE 4D besides my obvious love of new toys ...are
The drawbars !!! I mean they just had to be better than those LED sliders on the NE3....IMHO
And all that i heard about the NE4D simulated rotory effect that had been so improved from NE3 to NE4D ...
I was hoping the Rotory effect could equal the industry leader IMHO..."THE NEO Instruments VENTILATOR" of which i own and use with my NE3.
I do not really like carrying extra stuff ...i.e Drawbars and Ventilator ...I would rather not have to load them up
and carry them to rehearsal or a gig ...they are not heavy ...an do not take long to pack up and or set up an connect
to my NE3 ...but I was hoping I would not have to use either of these external additions to my keyboard rig ..
I love the drawbars on the New NE4D
On my NE 3 I am using Ocean Beach DB1 drawbars and tho very effective and much much easier for my clumsy
hands than the NE3 onboard LED drawbars ...The NE4D onboard physical drawbars tho not as smooth as
Hammond drawbars ...are really nice ...
The Rotory effect ..........I have found no significant changes from NE3 to NE4D.
I WILL NOT BE SELLING MY VENTILATOR!!
The NE 4 D only comes in a 61 key ...board .....maybe the future will bring us a 73 key model ...but not yet ...
and no word has come from NORD on a 73 key NE4D..
Had there been a 73 key NE4D I would have purchased it ....The 61 key model will take me some time to
get used to ...
And because the NE4D is a 61 key model ...the front panel is smaller ...and more concentrated and centered on the
top of the board ....
THE ORGAN SECTION TOP PANEL
Changes to the Organ section layout include ...
1. Drawbars take up the same are that the LED sliders took up on the NE3
2. The top right corner of the ORGAN section ..small preset/split area is replaced with preset/split/ drawbar
activation buttons....I am still learning this area ...so stay tuned ...
THE PIANO SECTION TOP PANEL
When I play ...I use more EP than ACCoustic piano ..so the very first change i see is on the
piano type selector....the WURL no longer exists as on the NE3 . It is replaced by E Piano2.
not really a significant change but a change an so noted ...
Above the Piano Type switch....is the Sample ENV button for selecting samples and cycling thru Release, settings
and Accoustic long release and string resonance ...
I need a bit more testing an trials on this area to really comment on it ..as I did not use it when playing my NE3
THE PROGRAM SECTION TOP PANEL
AFew significant changes here ...an i think some positive an some not IMHO...
Accessing ....system, menu, B3 and rotary internal system changes now have their own switches ...I like this addition...tho it is still used in conjunction with shift button.
The Program led window is still there ....but no longer are the system, midi , sound buttons with the Prog A
and Prog B and Live lites ....I am still uncomfortabe in this section when selecting programs ...Tho i really did
not get into the NE3 programs either ...
All in All ....are the changes great enuff for me to consider my NE3 outdated ...NO ....
IF i knew then what i know now ...would I have bought the NE4D ...I like new toys so I have to say
yes ...
I am at that age where i really dont like change ...but my new NE4D is forcing me to learn .....which they say
keeps Old Timers Disease at bay ...so I am relishing the newness....
What has surprised me is the smaller keyboard ..61 keys ...I have to kind of sit a bit more to the left now an that seems awkward ....
So I hope to tell you a bit more later ...I have not used my NE4D at rehearsal or a gig ...so we shall see ...
I am not really a technical guy ..so this is a bit limited of a review ....an you prob could read this in
any one of the magazine reviews .
I have not decided if i will sell my NE3 at least not for a while .....
again ...I will not be selling my VENTILATOR ....
Thanks for listening
Mike
thanks for putting up with me .. I am sure i have missed some things ...and those of you knowledgable
folks out there .....I am sure will let me know ...and I hope I have not offended any of the more
sensitive readers ......bye for now ..
