Subject:Re: now: Clonewheel as Vent Rival?

I am wondering whether we are pretty much getting to a point where some of the latest clones (h/w & s/w) are good enough to use without any outboard gear such as pre-amps (tube and DSP), external rotary, 30-band EQ etc apart from a good stereo amplifier.  Some basic tuning of tone controls, Leslie ramp-up/down times, key click and you're done.

I used to run a VK-7 through a Pro-3T with a homemade lower rotor and at times it did sound pretty good but it needed many hours (days, weeks etc?) of tweaking with EQ, reverb, and level controls to get right as well as a bunch of cables and custom adaptors to control the two cabinets that had to be on every gig, not to mention external drawbar controllers.  If the C/V had been split I might have felt that I could use it on the lower, but it wasn't so couldn't bring myself to use it - always sounded squirrelly.

Thankfully those days are gone!

PS:  For me the VK-8 tone and rotary effect is a huge improvement but lacks split C/V, is heavy and seems to be lacking a lower manual ;)
