Subject:VB3 Rotary Effect as Vent Rival?
In perusing Guido's GSi site, I just noticed an intriguing FAQ answer. The question is "Can I use VB3's built-in rotary simulation as an effect for external audio sources?" The answer, surprisingly (to me anyway) seems to be "YES!"
I was completely unaware of the 2nd VST format, VB3fx.dll, which Guido's description says can accept stereo audio inputs that are subsequently routed through the overdrive, spring reverb and rotary simulation effects.
It evidently only works for PC users, whom I suspect make up the majority of this forum, however the VB3 users here tend to swear by this sim...and it sounds great, particularly if Norm's work ("Hammond" parts played almost exclusively using this VST) is any indication.
So, my question is "WHY HAVE YOU VB3 USERS BEEN WITHHOLDING THIS INFO?"
OK...that's not my only question. This possibility obviously raises some others: Has anyone tried the sim as a standalone processor (ok...obviously it's not exactly "standalone," as it requires a laptop or other PC)? How does it hold up on its own? How does it stack up against the Vent, et al?
Certainly, if the VB3 sim is truly "all that and a bag of semiconductors," the question of "To Vent or not to Vent" may hold an entirely different answer than what many of us seem to have been thinking.
$500 is a lot of money, especially if you can spend roughly a tenth of that and get an equal (or even close) effect with a laptop you already own! Of course, there is the matter of hauling around a laptop...but I doubt it's much more cumbersome than a Vent, plus you get a bonus B-3 backup axe in the process!
Best,
