Perhaps generalize is not a great idea.
Technology is never inerently good or evil, it depends on how you use
it.

What's sure is that 20 years ago you couldn't have the kind of Hammond
sound you can have now coming from a 17 kg keyboard.

Nor the ability of studying many versions of the same song with ease.
Or to easily record and relisten to your playing.

Even communication from Italy to the UK was a matter of days instead
of fractions of a second.

"Computer files" can sound great, actually better than most vinils,
given they're recorded and encoded in a certain way and reproduced
trough a good set of speakers. They're just a medium, they've got
nothing to do with the music itself.

Sure, you hear a lot of sh** today, but that's only because it has
become so easy to actually bring togheter something and produce it
that a lot of people who really shouldn't try and do music do it
anyway (or perhaps not: who are we to judge?).
On the other hand really talented people can focus on the task of
actually composing and playing music instead of trying to find a way
to record it.

Just my two cents.
