This is always a judgement call, but in my experience in bands AND day jobs, overbearing superiors are best dealt with firmly but matter of factly and fairly. And depending on their temperament, not necessarily in the moment. Tone and timing are everything.

WAY more often often than not I have succeeded at establishing a higher level of respect for ME when dealing direct. And come away with a more mutual respect.
