>>I've been using a Lenovoideapad (with an i7 processor, 8 gigs of ram
and a 3/4 terabyte hard-drive running Win 7 Pro) for a couple of years
now and have lived through multiple hard-drive crashes and blue screens, MOST, I believe, attributable to excess heat and inferior components.

The 2nd time it crashed was a clear indication something was wrong.  It can be difficult to get the vendor to agree but keeping the mini-dumps MS creates for each crash should be enough evidence that all is not well.

After using Toshiba, HP and Compaq machines in the past the last 20 or so laptops my company has bought have been Dell's. The ones we get are assembled in Malaysia no doubt from Chinese manufactured components.  We had 2 of these machines fixed under warranty, one with a couple of sticky keys and the other with a flakey DVD drive, In each case Dell support did a remote login and ran their diagnostics, confirmed there was an issue (benefit of doubt to our advantage) and attended our premises next day, swapped the KB for the sticky keys and to our surprise upgraded the motherboard and DVD drive for the 2nd issue.  We are a corporate client but that is the same (next day) service they offer to retail clients here during the 12 month warranty.  We buy direct from Dell not through a reseller.

I am not endorsing Dell but that type of service is what should be supplied but you have to factor service levels into the purchase price. I am sure we could have bought all of these machines for 10% less from ASUS, ACER etc . Ironically Lenovo here is not cheap and always seem to be slightly behind on technology as they do not build to customer order.

I wouldn't recommend gigging with it - poor design doesn't fix itself.
