Subject:Re: OT--- Free Minimoge VST
Hi Dave
It would be great if we could move discussions on VST's on from being bogged down in the laptop or hardware debate and discuss the sonic merits of each. As you state there are those including myself who prefer to use laptops live and others who prefer hardware. There has in the past been a productive discussion on sonic merits of VST's and in particular VB3 vs Nord, XK3c etc which in my recollection found there is little difference between them. A similar discussion on the sonic merits of hardware synths vs soft synths might add to the body of knowledge of all here.
The Minimogue developer has mp3 comparisons of the MiniMonstaVST and Minimogue, and also Minimoog Voyager and Minimogue on his site. It would be good to read some comment from others as to how Minimogue, MinMonsta or other VST's or Minimoog and other hardware measure up sonically in their opinion.
Based on my limited testing of Minimogue last night it seemed to have an easier to use interface than MiniMonsta and with 150 patches a good range of "presets" to work from to create custom patches usable in some contemporary covers we do e.g. a bass synth start to Katy Perry's Hot n Cold and Lady Gaga's Bad Romance.
Cheers
Mark

There are 2 schools of thought here, neither wrong. Some use a computer on stage, others won't have one. Reasons why/why not don't really matter in the context of your question, Mark. There are many for each side. Norman, and many others, perform using a laptop. Bruce, and many others, prefer not to have a computer on stage. The VST is free, but the laptop to run it is not. So if you factor in the computer the pricing is alot closer to even up, in many cases less for the Tetra. That's one answer. I'm sure Bruce will have a better one.
