I think they had more overlap than that. I owned one of the early
blue-top ones, which I bought used, but not very old, in 1972. And I
know they were still making the striped-chrome ones when I graduated
college in 1977. According to Wikipedia -- which is *never* wrong ;-)
-- they were made from 1967 to 1980.

The RMI Electra Piano was considered pretty amazing in its day, and
weighed far less than the Helpinstill and Yamaha pianos -- and didn't
have strings to tune. It didn't sound exactly like an acoustic piano,
but it was closer in tone than a Rhodes or Wurli; it tended to occupy
the same place in the mix as a real piano. What it sorely lacked was
velocity sensitivity: if it had that, I think it would have been a
strong contender to replace the Rhodes/Wurli.
