You can't break the laws of physics, it's true. I worked with stacks of VOTT speaker back in their day and the quality
and quantity of the sound has come a LONG way. We took a lot of those cabinets to the dump and sold off the drivers.
No sound company would even think of using such a speaker these days. They were big, heavy, and probably put out
about 110 db SPL just before blowing up. That level is more than easily attained by a much smaller cabinet and with the
amps and processors today the sound is light years ahead of the old theater cabinets. Even the subs are smaller and more
efficient. You and probably find some A7s for a few hundred bucks and that is all they are worth. No laws of physics have been broken but technology has moved forward. For FOH systems like arrays can have boxes added or removed to suit the size of the venue and I cant remember the last time I saw a front loaded horn 2 way design even in point source systems. The terms full bandwidth and coherence mean a lot more today they did 50+ years ago. Klipsch made much better sounding speakers back then. The VOTT speakers have become popular with some hobbyist stereo guys for whatever historic reason but there is a reason you
don't see them used in concerts anymore. Don't get me wrong, I used them for many years and they were some of the best things we could get at the time. I did a lot of shows with stacks of them and the JBL slotted bass horns (I forget the model #) with the
(Lens) horns. But the sound I get out of a modern sound system if far better in response, clarity, and power than any of the old
systems and the audience of today expects good sound (especially with the price of tickets these days). VOTTs would work fine
for a bar band (don't forget to carry spare drivers and crossovers) if you have the room and want to move the extra weight but
in pro audio they are history for a lot of reasons. If you want to listen to VOTTs from 500 feet away you better have a lot of them
and a big Ryder truck to move them but why you would want to escapes me. They did a re-issue of the A7 ten years ago and the
price was $4000 each. I doubt many were sold, at least not for pro audio use ("audiophiles" will buy anything as long as it is big, expensive or it has tubes in it). Altec and JBL are in the small computer speaker market these days.

It may have come a long way but I still do not see or hear anything that
matches the quality AND quantity of audio. Set both outside, feed same
signal, move away 500 feet. See which system projects full bandwidth
coherently. Can't squash the laws of physics.

That was 1970.... in 2012 you can get something that sounds better and fits
in a large car trunk.
Speaker technology has come a long way in the last 50 years!
