I currently use a Spacestation MkII for live monitor (I use inears as well, which is THE ticket to controlling the acoustic nightmares we run into). It isnt strictly stereo, but it creates an image that makes stereo patches work for me. Its 12" x 11"x 18", weighs 30 pounds, 200 watts into 2 - 8" speakers, has a subwoofer output which I rarely need. It isnt ideal sonically, but SO easy to use logistically, and the sound is adequate for me. You should check out this type of monitor, might work for you too.

For gigs with standard backline setups (ie, blaring guitars) , I carry a small mixer and several mics, and I can create my own inear mix independent of the house system. If its a very loud gig I find that shooting muff ear protectors overtop of the inears help.

If I could get away with playing in mono, that would be the easiest, least expensive option. I just don't think it's possible. As Bobby stated, pretty much all of my patches are stereo
