I made a heavy duty ¼” stereo cable with a Neutrik inline headphone jack about 4 foot long. Then I ran this into the headphone jack on a small desktop Behringer(Any kind will work this was just economical) mixer with 2-XLR/1/4” channels and two sets of stereo inputs. The two channels of the different inputs allow for a ton of flexibility.

Channel 1 ¼”- I got a mono board mix with everyone else(but my stuff) mixed in

Channel 2 ¼”- I used to monitor my guitar via a split from my direct box going to the board

Channel 3 & 4- Glorious Stereo mix from keys mixer

Channel 5 & 6 open

This option works well and allows you to control your own personal mix in your IEM’s.

I have also used the XLR’s with two microphones to pick up everything else from the stage. This is great to stop the isolation feeling that sometimes bothers people when using IEM’s. Like I said this may not work for everyone but is a nice economical option(right around $100) with tons of flexibility. YMMV.

If you’re stationed at your keyboards the entire nite, you really don’t need wireless. I just bought a Shure wired system for $450. It has the hardwired belt pack. I spent another $100 and found a Shure P4m on ebay. That rig allows me stereo in ear monitoring at half the price, and gives me control of 4 feeds. I run my keys stereo into 2 of them, and then run a feed from whatever the PA situation is into another channel, and leaves me a 4th channel free. All have pan controls. One band I play with has a complete in-ear rig with our own monitor console, so I take a stereo feed from it for all non-keyboard signals. Another band I play with has no in ear rig, and I take whatever feed I get from the PA, and if I don’t like the amount of my vocal, I can actually run my vocal mic into its own channel and then to the PA as it has true-pass-thru. LOVE IT.

I have a set of Sensaphonics custom molds and drivers (about $1000 including audiology evaluation and molding session), and a set of Futuresonics Atrias as a back up ($175 factory direct), and a pair of Shure E5 dual drivers as a back-up backup. I never use them.

I’ve done damage to my ears, losing mids and highs in my right ear which is
ringing all the time. It’s taken years for this to happen, but I’m now
playing as often as four nights a week. A bass player friend of mine
highly recommended the Carvin EM900S wireless set-up, but I don’t need
wireless and this product has received mixed reviews. I’ve been searching
for an mixer/headphone amp with the ability to mix a couple of sources.
Ideally, I’d like the ability to:

- Hear myself in stereo

- Hear the band vocals mix in mono

- Have some form of limiter to protect my ears from further damage

I send a mono keyboard mix to the PA and in turn I was going to bring a
monitor mix back to me. It occurred to me that I could try using Mackie
1202 or 1202VLZ mixers with headphone output I have for starters so I but
would really prefer not having an additional piece of gear that heavy and
large. I looked at the Sweetwater site and thought about the following
earpieces:

- Bose IE2
- Etymotic mc5
- Audio Tecnica EP3
- Westone UM1
Etc…

Unfortunately the entire band is not ready for the outlay of cash for a
wireless system. I’m hoping the guitar will bleed enough into the vocal
mikes. I’ve been searching through the archives and have found some info
there, but thought I’d ask again for feedback from experienced users.

Thanks in advance.
