Brian,
I was using a Roland VR-760 for organs, pianos and other sounds since I have the Ultimate Keys card in it. I paired that with a Roland RD300SX. With an Ultimate Keys card in the VR and a Vent, I was set for most things that came my way. But the band I'm with now would really like to use some Synth sounds and what I could find on the Ultimate Keys card wasn't fitting the bill.
Enter MainStage. I learned a lot using it and I still have it. It is very sophisticated and fun to use. I know Bobby and a few others were using it no problems. Part of the issue may be my Novation Impulse 61 midi controller. I was doing a synth solo and used the pitch wheel, but when it snapped back to center, something didn't work and suddenly I was in a different key. It's like it didn't return to 0. Could be the controller, could be my setting, could be MainStage. But something similar happened repeatedly where somehow suddenly the key changed and I didn't go near the pitch wheel. Upon examination I found several patches, which I had set for a -12 transpose was suddenly now -11 or -10, putting my keyboard in either C# or D for that song.
I finally decided that if I could do that so inadvertently, I wasn't to be trusted using this thing live. So enter the Kronos. I've never had a Korg before, but for performing live, I think the sounds are fine and by layering up to 16 sounds per combi, velocity triggering, splits, layers, insert effects (I'm not even sure what those are yet..lol), master effects, total effects, Karma, etc., it has a LOT of possibilities.
I haven't decided what I'm going to pair it up with. The Korg organs definitely have balls. And running them through the Vent as Craig does could allow me to eliminate the VR and use hte 88 key RD300 to control Korg sounds and provide a few of it's own. OR like I did playing out tonight, (first time with Korg) I used it with my VR just to have a keyboard I'm totally familiar with as well as the new Korg.
I've already tried controlling the Korg sounds from my RD300 via midi. Was a breeze to set up. If I use only the Korg's engine, with one press of a button I can set the tones played on both keyboards. (remote keyboard will use a different midi channel).
So I'll let you know how it goes, but so far it came through with flying colors.
Gene
