I'm not sure that 'totally disinterested' is the right term. Maybe,
'extremely polite' ? I've heard comments that 60-70's era British TV
audiences were often that way. I'm not sure why: Maybe they were
chosen by that criterion? Or sternly cautioned before the shows?
Anyone from our UK contingent old enough to comment?

It is surreal to see what was arguably the loudest, over-the-top band of
their era at full tilt, while the audience sits there in tranquil
silence, other than a few head-bobbers!

It's even more so in the Child In Time clip: CIT is about someone going
on a shooting rampage, a remarkably dark topic for that era. It seems
obvious that the audience is either clueless to the meaning, or politely
ignoring the '500-lb. gorilla.'
