I was proven wrong last night. I opened Presonus and there was the VB3. I'm using Presonus Studio One Pro which is not the lite version.
I tried it backward and forward and the c/v is still the same. Leslie on and Leslie off, several different stop settings and still the same.
I've listened to it very closely and what I find is the same c/v that was in one of my older A100s.
Certain consoles have different c/v effects. It all depends on the model and year.
Some of the A's have that very c/v effect. It's the one that I thought was motor boating.
The guy I sold it to loved it. Again, a matter of taste.
I've never heard it in any B I ever played in the last 40+ years.
Here's why, the chorus effect on a console-not the tone generated type- is actually two effects rolled into one. If you listen closely to that effect you'll hear vibrato and chorus.
Again, depending on the year and model, you might get different percentages of each.
In my old A it was maybe 60% vibrato and 40% chorus. This is all dependent on the electronic components in the organ and can actually be adjusted by changing those components for different values. As the years changed so did the components.
I confirmed this with Murph Wanka in Nashville. Murph is a long time Hammond guru that I consulted on this issue. I completely disassembled the scanner and shocked it with high voltage and nothing changed. At that point we realized that the effect was working properly although not a pleasant sound.
I sent Murph an MP3 of the sound and he said there was nothing wrong with it. It's the way it was built.
I personally never liked the older A c/v and it appears that the VB3 c/v is modeled after that same effect. More vibrato and less chorus.
I've listened to it through various speakers and headphones and the effect is the same on all of them.
This is definitely a matter of taste and not an issue with the software.
There is also a terrible phasing artifact that appears when using C3 AND the onboard Leslie in VB3. If I were to use it I'd have to try it with my Vent. There is no phasing that I can hear with the Leslie and none with the c/v but when the two are combined it's pretty bad. It happens every 2 to 3 seconds and sounds like phase cancellation. Even HS conquered that issue years ago.
The VB3 will work on some of my recordings but definitely not in a live situation.
I wish I had the love for it that most users have but I just can't get used to that sound. It would certainly make life a lot easier in some respects.
I do think it's a great program. Just not for me.
For now it's back to the Nords and the real thing.

VB3 is designed to ONLY work inside a VST Host software. Mainstage is a VST host - it also comes with its own VST instruments and effects but can run any VST configured and installed as an AU (Audio Unit) on Apple hardware. I am not an Apple user but in the PC world the majority of virtual instruments DO NOT run as standalones, they are designed to be installed in a VST Host such as Cantabile. VST's that can be installed as standalone software or run inside a VST Host give you the option at time of install to select either Stand Alone or VST and then in some cases further options, RTAS etc.

VB3 is one of the best written and bulletproof VST's I have tried. You should check that all other effects in Mainstage are OFF to ensure that none are active and processing the output from VB3. If this is the case and you do not like the VB3 C/V or Leslie so be it but otherwise I would suggest you uninstall and reinstall VB3. If you are having issues getting Mainstage to operate correctly then maybe there are some Mac users here who can help. The attraction of Mainstage for live performance has got me thinking about building a hackintosh but until then I cannot help further.
