John,

Totally agree, and I think new pedals ARE nice. I have gotten a few
sets that were worn but the overall number is small. When I was a kid I used
to wear knitted slippers on my A-102 that my mom made. Later when I played
out, used shoes or sneakers, whatever I was wearing. Had those pedal
protectors on my A-102 but the damn things always sliding up towards the
console. Kept the pedals pretty though. Hammond did the right thing on the
X-66, metal caps on the naturals, never wear out! The Concords carried the
flash but not the meat!! Thin plastic covers that would wear right thru to
the wood. Stapled on thin covers!!!!!

Hi Keith

I just wanted to warn anyone thinking of those pedals as to what happens to
a timber pedal. At something around $2K they are not a cheap item. The
pedalboard on the organ I was using for gigs had pedals which looked very
nice when new but the 'white' notes were not solid timber. What you saw was
a timber veneer which took less than 2 years to begin to wear through. I'm
easy on the pedals and I don't 'clomp' on them and have been trained in
decent pedal technique but that was just my experience. Like others here
I've taught pedal technique for around 40 years. All I wanted to do was to
sound a note of caution and to be careful. When the pedals are new is the
time to do something about it.

Regards
John

John,

The pedal protectors are a great accessory, most every organ store used
to carry them. But in the course of servicing organs 40+ years, it usually
takes a good 15-20+ years for the pedals to wear down. At that point just
replace the worn ones.

That pedalboard is going to wear in no time. Timber looks very nice but I'm
very surprised that they didn't go in for a tough plastic surface. Wooden
pedals for gig work is not a good idea, (yes, I know your B3 at home has
wooden pedals) the grit and muck off the floor will act like a grinding
wheel on those. I used a 25-note wooden pedalboard for gig work and the
stuff that collects on the bottom of your shoes will wear the surface off a
timber pedal as quickly as anything (and I am careful). If you get one of
those, put a large rug or piece of carpet underneath the whole setup so that
as you walk on, the carpet will automatically take most of the grit from the
soles of your shoes. Another alternative for us pedal players is to get some
U-shaped clear, reasonably hard plastic that will slip over the 'natural'
pedals and will grip to the sides of each pedal so that it won't slip. I
like my equipment to look like it just came off the showroom floor as I'm
sure you do. In one of my other lives, I play a 40 year old electronic organ
with a full 32-note wooden pedalboard which was fitted with those covers
from day one. It still looks like new, there's not a mark anywhere.

Cheers
John

Try two-plus grand...$2,200 US street! At least they're $2,199 at
Sweetwater, and that's $400 off the "we're-really-REALLY-proud-of-these"
MSRP of $2,599! That's your price for the Nord Pedal Keys 27, billed as an
"Organ Bass Key MIDI Pedalboard with Swell Controller for the Nord C2
Digital Organ," or PK27, but I'll bet you dollars to drawbars this is the
same unit sold as the 2-octave pedal clavier for the C2D. You can see them
on Sweetwater's site here:

No price yet at Sweetwater for the C2D, although they'll evidently take an
order.

Peace,
Fox
