The older consoles with wax caps, the wax caps leak after a while as
the caps made then were not sealed like the modern red caps in the
later years of Hammond TG's and onwards. Also I think the older caps
had nasty carcinogenic goop in them. Hoping that a Hammond tech will
always be assailable, the know-how to recap these generators is not
something you can leave to a regular electronics guy as recalibrating
the pickups is something that was learned by hammond techs at the
factory, a guarded secret and those younger techs may have learned it
from others or discovered through trial and error how to properly recap
a TG. So the other issue is not just when to recap but who can do it
properly. Most don't know or remember what a brand new TG sounds like
so if you are used to your older console with the mellowed caps you may
freak out with a recap. Up against the passage of time, techs get old
and retire, the knowledge gets lost, you are left with a console that
by rights can be rejuvenated but only if properly done. There are
stories of those that did get a recap and hated it and those who were
lucky and got it right. If you have the budget get it done by someone
who has done it before and gets good results. You may have to ship your
rig to the tech if you're not lucky to have one in town.There are TG
pickup values charts these techs keep as a reference.

these
were originally?
Am I correct that the TG is all very low voltage? If so, they might
last
"forever."
