I remember the hype over this instrument. Ray Kurzweil has been a genius of
promotion.

The test that they set up was in a studio, with the Kurz being compared to
the very instrument it was sampled from. The piano was not in the same room
with the listeners, so you were hearing a piano played over speakers
compared to a recording of that same piano played over the same speakers.
That levelled the playing field a lot! Then I am sure that they were not
playing demanding classical music that exposes the shortcomings of samplers.

I worked at a music store that had one awhile after they came out. And yes,
everybody thought it was the greatest sounding electronic grand piano sound
to that time.
