Subject:Re: Leslie 2101
The 2101 mkii is much better than its predecessor. I owned the 21 system a couple of years ago for a while. I also own a Vent. Depending on your amp situations(s), using the Vent is easy and is an excellent addition to any clone today; some guys are also running their vintage Hammonds through the Ventilator, all with great results. If you bought one, you would not regret it.
Back to the mkii; yes the low rotor sim is really very good and at home or studio is great, and you can adjust the horn variables to your liking as well. I have played out live, 5 piece band, 2 guitarheads that keep it reasonable (using Fender Blues Jr's for the most part) and can use the mkii and it sounds great. Keeping it under control is key; we try to play dynamically and stay away from the Tequilla!! In a live band mix let the bassman do his thing anyways. Other gig situations the mkii can get lost in the mix; going Vent into FOH would be a great alternative than pushing the mkii and miking it. The mkii has a decent setting for a 122 and it also has a 21 type setting that sounds really good depending on what your ears tell you and what you are used to listening to; jazz vs. rock....I have not been disappointed with this amp, and I have been leaving my 145 at home more and more.
As far as adding some fat bottom, you have a couple of choices. Buy a new 2121 from HS or a used one from the market. Use a decent bass amp with 12's or a 15. You can also use a set of passive PA speakers, or a bass cabinet with 2x10's or 2x12's wired in "stereo, if you will" (left & right channels) using a speakon nutrik plug. The mkii has a speakon jack on the back of the amp that will allow you to hook up speakers as I described above directly into the mkii receiving the "75 watts" per channel that would be used by the on-board 6" speakers. When you do this, the 6" speakers are disabled. Stick the mkii on top of the external speakers, if you can, and you have a pretty powerful portable full range Leslie. [Now ducking for cover] I love playing through my 145, but have had to go lighter in my personal rig choices due health reasons, that said I want my bandmates, the audience and myself to believe the sound and experience is all there. I think it
is, of course mileage varies out there and everyone has their own personal opinions. These are mine. My current clones are Nord E3, & C2, at the moment. Good luck and enjoy whatever you choose.
