Yes, I use a pre-amp with my CX-3.  CX-3 --> Art Pre-amp --> Vent.  I do not overdrive the pre-amp at all so it delivers a clean but warmed sound into the Vent.  So for me, it is not redundant, and is the only way I would ever use the CX-3 with a Vent.
