There was mentioned 3-pedal, so it's not common simple two wire cable.
Yes, simple pedal will work, just polarity can be reversed (which can
be changed by reconnecting wires on the switch, changing the switch,
or by polarity switch on some pedals, or by setting in the instrument,
and some instruments recognize polarity automatically). But I suppose
3-pedal must have more wires in the cable to work. They even use
special connectors, not TRS jack.

As there are two possibilities how to connect pots in the pedal, some
manufacturers use one, some the other one. It's possible M-Audio uses
Roland way...
