Subject:Re: Standalone analog C/V?

I don't think this solution will satisfy your objection, but I have been thinking about how to mitigate the effect of having the percussion applied to the C/V. (Short of the creative but more extreme suggestions offered after your post ;-)

I propose a "percussion holdoff" function that slightly delays the onset (i.e. rotation) of the vibrato generator during the percussion transient. So there is no vibrato while the percussive "ping" dominates the sound, and vibrato is there as normal when the drawbar sound takes over.

I think this could sound quite good, but only if the holdoff amount was well matched to the percussion settings. I don't know how to do it automatically, so the default answer is a control pot or selector switch. Painful and redundant, but at least the user has the option of finely tuning it if it is important to them. (On slow percussion in particular.)

I am not totally averse to listening to a MIDI stream if the percussion control information is transmitted. I must admit that I am not a MIDI expert, especially as it pertains to clonewheels. It would be wishful thinking to assume there are defacto standards that all clones implement.

Again, I don't think this "half-fast" solution will satisfy skeptics, especially if they have better, more "pure" alternatives. It still may be worth it for some.

I am very happy with my Hammond XK3c and XK1, with the one exception of the chorus vibrato effect, which I find too warbly and not like the C/V on any real or recorded Hammond console that I have ever heard or played. However, I would not be interested in an outboard C/V effect that would affect percussion tones as well as sustained tones. Having percussion tones unaffected by the C/V effect is an indispensable component of the Hammond sound for me.

Is there any interest in a standalone scanning chorus/vibrato? I have been reading complaints about the C/V on some of the clones.
