The shrillness is usually in the top octaves on clones. There is clearly a nice slightly overdriven sound with the Tube but I don't think this answers his question.

Leo, I put up a file at http://www.sendspace.com/file/xbecs9 listen and you'll be able to hear if it does enough to make it worthwhile. There is one on there with no tube pre just straight into the vent (first one). If they all sound the same to you you know it doesn't make enough of a difference. Just make sure you use the link at the bottom to download that says " Click here to start download from sendspace" with the arrow to the left.
