Subject:A MIDI milestone: 30 years of use (and abuse!)

Congratulations to Dave Smith (Dave Smith Instruments) and Ikaturo Kakehashi (Roland) who will receive the 2013 Technical GRAMMY Award for the development of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface).

The MIDI protocol was co-developed by Smith while he was at his earlier company, Sequential Circuits and Kakehashi, the founder of Roland Corporation. The first MIDI-equipped synthesizer, the Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 was launched 30 years ago, in December of 1982. Two synthesizers connected by MIDI — a Prophet 600 and Roland's Jupiter 6 — were first demonstrated at the NAMM show in January of 1983. The MIDI standard was adopted throughout the industry and remains a vital part of music production — both live and in the studio — today.
