I couldn't agree more with the sentiments. Like Dennis, I started out
in the '60s as the poor guy in a town full of players (Niagara Falls,
NY). Most of them had at least well-off parents, so they all had
Hammonds. I had a Dart Melosonic, followed by a Farfisa Mini-Compact.
Wanted a Leslie, couldn't afford one, so I got the original Uni-Vibe
from Lafayette Electronics. It didn't really sound like a B-3 and 122,
but I got by.

Every clone that came out, from the T1 and CX3 on, was way better than
that setup, and great music was made in the '80s with those keyboards.
I got a great deal on an Elka X-50 (same vintage) and gigged with it for
seven years; the only thing I added was a DOD chorus pedal to give me a
cheap impression of chorus vibrato. Everything since the Voce V3 and
Hammond XB-2 has been *more* than usable in a pro gigging context.
Today's choices are astoundingly close to the Real Deal. They all fall
short in a point or two, but not by much. A craftsman doesn't blame his
tools ...
