Subject:Re. Latency on HP mini 210 Beats netbook ASIO4ALL
Thomas, What is the latency like. How quick does the VB3 trigger from the C1. And what buffer setting are you at on the computer?
>
It's been a matter of suck it and see. The notes trigger as fast as I can play them though.
I've probably not set ASIO4ALL up to perfection but this works fine for me. ( If any-one can explain how it really should be set up I would like to know )
But for now.....
I've got it set as......
in Latency Compensation 32 samples
Out Latency compensation 32 samples.
( I don't have any outside audio being fed into VB3 at present )
Buffer offset 4ms
ASIO Buffer 512 samples.
Just to check, as you have asked about this., I just set the Buffer offset to 2ms and the Asio Buffer samples to 192 and it still played fine until I slapped the keys fast with both hands and flat palms and I think I just about detected the tiniest glitch, listening on headphones. Normal playing was absolutely fine.
Also I have found the HP 210 mini beats netbook's soundcard is totally silent when nothing is being played.
Previously I tried out VB3 using an older xp laptop with a Realtek ac95 soundcard. This worked well enough to get a good idea of how everything works, but the HD soundcard in the HP netbook is streets ahead for quality. Listening to the VB3 reverb on the Realtek soundcard I could hear a very odd effect when I played a note and then listened to the reverb fade out. On headphones it made an odd swirling sound to the left and right ( nothing to do with the rotary effect )
Listening to the VB3 reverb on the new card, it is absolutely fine.
I got rid of Norton Antivirus that comes with the machine and replaced it Mcafee that isn't very intrusive even when active.
Putting the netbook into sleep mode, it boots up very quickly and it always picks my midi connection. I am using an ESI Midimate II.
The HP netbook opens a full 180 degrees so can stand vertically and rest against my C1's music rest. Usefully it also has 3 USB 2 connections and an audio in as well as an audio out. Although I have it mains powered, I believe it should run for more than five hours on its battery.
Thomas.
