This is true. I recommend neither. Leave the hole, and slammin' those G-F's will have that much more effect.
I firmly believe that learning to play is a progressive series of 'lessons', things you learn to do from listening to others and incorporating them to your style. First you learn what to play. Lordy-mama, there's just so MUCH! But then there's the much harder lesson - learning when to not play them.
