no doubt on any of that, minor thirds work great in solo's over majors

BUT, the original post was asking which chord to play, D major or minor. If you play a full D major chord over the vocal on this song it's going to sound odd and it'll throw most singers big time as its actually modulating the key signature for a moment if you play D major.
To be honest, I cant hear any major third on the D in the Temps recording, it sounds like root and 5th only, but hey i'm probably tone deaf after all these years of holding the top C with the Leslie on fast.
