For another good version of the song look up the Temps Medley by Hall & Oates. It was recorded at the Apollo IIRC & had Eddie Kendricks & David Ruffin doing the vocals. As per the original discussion, the guitar player is playing a D9 - not in the original version, but fits very well nonetheless - which puts at least this version squarely in the D-major camp.
