The last heavy rock band I played back in the mid 80's had 6 Peavy CS 800's... very heavy but very loud... indoors or out.

I've been an electronics tech for 40+years and a musician even longer than that.
I have to agree with with both of you. However, one cannot compare watts, electric output, to SPL. There are TOO many factors for it to be simple. Also, there is a tremendous difference  in producing adequate sound in a room compared to outside venues.
