I always place my amp/s on milk crates and have some black cloth to cover the crates on stage . Both my guitar amp and KB amp are combos and I find this gives much better projection if they not mic'd .  I usually DI the KB into a PA and rely on foldback but we have a gig coming up in a smaller venue and don't think the house PA will cope with some deep synth patches we use for some songs so will be taking a KB amp - a first for me using it live.

While this subject may come around regularly I get some valuable tips from the setups used by other group members.

Most of the time I am going through the PA which is nice as my amp becomes my monitor and I can adjust it for a comfortable volume and point it towards me and the band. In the rare situation when I'm not going through the PA and my amp is basically what the audience and me hears, I have had it directly behind me which is probably  not the best place since I'm probably blocking it anyway and it has my ears ringing after the gig . I would like to preserve the hearing I do have left! It is 120W and a wedge shape already so no need to tilt it. Since I'm usually at the edge of the stage there often is not much room to place it anywhere else, but next time I'll put it off to the side angled a bit towards me, the band and audience and maybe put it on a chair or stand if it has to be off stage. Not sure what other choices I have.

For small venues I usually have my amp beside and slightly behind me, facing the audience, tipped back against the wall for extra projection, and usually angled slightly towards me. I stand up to play, and I like to hear some of the highs from the combo's tweeter. When I DI to the PA, I have the amp beside me, facing across the stage, so that only the drummer and I get the full blast. And of course I can turn down the volume a bit too... ;-)
