Sounds like a good idea.....What were the results of the 1996 shootout?
The MIDI files would add some consistency and maybe the mp3 could
be somehow posted without reference to which clone was used. Then
we could vote and post the results. We would need to send files to
someone who could keep track of what clone went with what mp3 file.
The results would of course be subjective as always but it would be fun
and interesting as well. I would be interested in hearing the different
tube and tonewheel sets on the XK series and we should record from
the direct outs with no external effects or EQ. Maybe each could be
recorded with and without the Vent since that has almost become the
standard accessory for those who have one. Maybe specify the bit rate
for consistency. If there are enough people with a wide enough variety
of clones it would be good info for an article. The voters could specify
what clone they used personally for even more perspective.

If you want to duplicate the original (1996) Great Clone Shootout,
you'll want to be a bit more 'clinical' about it:
* We used the same keyboard, a Hammond XB-2, to control all the
clones so that keyboard feel (and location) wouldn't have any effect.
* Between each clone, a bit of real Hammond was played to sort of
'cleanse the palette.' (It's easy to pick one clone over another
based on bright vs. dark, etc. -- but both of them may not sound
like a real B-3.)
* We played several styles of music and drawbar settings, but the
same player tried his style on all of the clones, using the same
settings.
* No one -- including the player -- knew which clone was which, so
that we could vote on the results without built-in prejudices.
We all trucked over to Goff Professional for the first Shootout, but I
think the same results could be had with MIDI files. A few players
could sit down and create a MIDI'ed performance in a certain style --
say, Jimmy Smith or Gregg Rolie or Keith Emerson or whatever. Then,
everyone could download the files, play them through their clone, and
send the results as MP3 files. I don't think there is a clone out
there, anywhere, that doesn't support MIDI In, right?
This eliminates differences in performance skill or enthusiasm, focusing
strictly on the tone of the organ. It also would allow for variations
like 'Electro 3 with Ventilator' and 'Electro 3 with internal sim' that
were spot-on identical. And finally, it eliminates differences in
recording/mic'ing skill.
As far as drawbars go, you only need about three or four settings,
things like --
88 8000 000 w/perc + C3 vib
88 8864 468 w/overdrive
etc.
