Except for the engine,landing gear etc. Zero's were made out of wood and canvas-

Exactly. I remember getting toys made in Japan in the late '50's. When you tore into them, it was made out of recycled metal from American products like beer cans with the paint and logo still on the inside. All they did was turn the can inside out.
