I was a long time DP user until my worksite switched to the Dark Side from being all-Mac, and I slowly converted myself to Windows. BTW, this is not intended to start any Mac-vs-PC discussion, rather it's pertinent to my comments here.
I have been using SONAR for about 2 years now, after briefly auditioning some other players in the PC DAW world.
SONAR's MIDI editing rivals that of DP, and is head and shoulders above any of the others I have been exposed to.
All of the VSTI's run really well under SONAR. I use VB3 almost every day, and I am seriously contemplating switching from my Nord E2 61 to a laptop for my live playing.
For $500, you get the Producer Edition, which comes with an extraordinary collection of great-sounding sampled instruments and effect plug-ins.
I don't work for Cakewalk (now owned by Roland), just a very satisfied user of their software.
Naturally, YMMV. But I'm just sayin'...
