I started with Sonar which I hated, then got Reaper which I love.
Along the way picked up Cubase 4 which I like as well. Upgraded to Cubase 5 which was full of glitches. Beware with Steinberg, I think they are going through a change of ownership right now.
I like Reaper for it's vast FX bundle, and frequently use it for my final mixes or in acoustic settings.
