Subject:RE: OT RECORDING SOFTWARE
Hi Norm,
I didn't mean to imply that ProTools wasn't capable of MIDI but it certainly isn't it's strength. I have wasted more time
debugging MIDI issues on ProTools than most others....of course some of that time certainly may have been caused by a
lack of understanding on my part. Cubase has really been the one that seemed to really put some thought into MIDI as
opposed to most others who seem to add it as an afterthought (IMHO at least :)). I didn't get into the MIDI section on
ProTools 9 very much but I think that version needs a bit more debugging before it's ready for prime time. They are trying
to adjust to the foothold they lost by trying to stay to proprietary and are now having to play on even ground with all of the
other DAW software that wasn't hindered by that foothold... now that the CPU power allows native operation without all of the
expensive (HD/MOTU type) co-processing cards. They were the only way to really achieve low latency in the early years though.
There are many good recording software packages out there now and it's down to what workflow works best for each individual.
A lot of the schools teach on ProTools so that is what many newcomers get exposed to it and there are so many ProTools equipped
studios still around so it makes sense. I was really surprised by the Reaper software. For a long time I wouldn't give it the time of
day because it was so "small and inexpensive"....now I feel like I was a real snob to think that way. I use it at least half of the time now
even though I have "bigger and more expensive" DAWs. At the end of the day for me it is all about workflow. The software doesn't
really have a "sound" but nice mic pres and A/D, D/A conversion makes any software shine. I use the same plug-ins no matter what
software I am using so the main recording software is just a means to an end for me. Of course YMMV....Now if I just had...talent
I would be all set... :). I have been spending more time mixing & recording lately than playing and after listening to some of these
great players I have been fortunate to work with I am starting to think that I am really better off working with the musicians than
trying to be one! :)
Cheers,
Gary

It's no fun when nothing works!
I am a recent convert to MIDI recording ..I. use Pro Tools LE 8..
I have had very little issues & love using MIDI.. I have heard Cubase is the
best for MIDI.
With ProTools you just open an "Instrument Track" choose a plug in
instrument & there it is..Sometimes i have to hit record on the track & the
transporter to audition the sound..
Also you must set up your controller in the MIDI set up section..Usually
there is a list of brand names to choose from & the controller must have all
the drivers hooked up correctly..
