I only suggested the Y adapter in case he wanted to keep the two signals seperate running into two channels on the board, which he said he did not. I never suggested that the Y adapter be used for the purpose of summing stereo to mono.

Subject: Re: [CWSG] OT Ipad connection question
I don't really know if the Ipad process speed is up to handling gig requirements without any problems (notes hanging, etc.). I'm not doing a gig with it, but I'm planning to take my Ipad to a rehearsal this week to use with my piano just to have some organ sounds.
If want to use an Ipad on gigs, you might want to consider getting the Alesis doc. It simplifies everthing quite a bit ... just slip your Ipad into it, plug in your midi controller, plug in your 1/4" output cables and you're good to go.
As far as summing to mono is concerned, I've only found one solution that worked for me (no phase cancellation etc), and that's running the L & R stereo output into a Radial JDI DI box (with transformer) and summing them that way. There may be other ways of doing it, but I've never been happy with the "Y" cord solution.
